We learned tonight that a web page is really written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). The HTML tells the web browser how to display the page. Pages link to other pages using hyperlinks (written hyperlink this text).
Search engines send software robots called crawlers to find pages on the Web to index. They go from page to page via hyperlinks.
Once a crawler finds a page, the search engine records every word in it and the position of that word in a list that says: this word (for example, "cow") appears on this page and this page and that page.
We watched this video about web crawlers (skipping the bad word at the beginning).
